Atago Shrine has been watching a fresh burst of bear activity in Kyoto: on May 6, 2026, one young black bear like animal was reported in a residential area of Nishigamo, Kita Ward, after residents called in a sighting to the police and ward office. Earlier in May 2026, a bear was also seen on the back mountain of Ninna ji in Ukyo Ward, and that hillside area was closed to entry.

The hottest ground has been around Ukyo Ward and the Arashiyama side of Kyoto City, where sightings have repeatedly clustered along the Kiyotaki River, near Kozan ji, and around Ninna ji. Activity has been strongest in November 2025, when 40 incidents were logged, then October 2025 with 28, while April 2026 still carried 6 reports and March 2026 had 5; across this area, black bear sightings have now reached 557 in total.
