We were walking along the lakeshore from the Tatsuko statue toward the shrine — about five kilometers. Then, around the three-kilometer mark, a cub came down from the mountain onto the road. We were ringing a bear bell, but it didn’t run away, and thinking the mother might be nearby, we turned back toward the Tatsuko statue. It was nerve-wracking — it’s startling when one suddenly appears.

We were walking North East towards Mikage. Checked behind us and saw a bear cub on the road, which then proceeded to break into a full gallop in our direction (see photo). Mum not seen. Photo taken with 500mm lens at exactly 12:00. Chase lasted about 30 seconds before the cub exited the road to the south, into the forest. Sighting between Okami river & Memuro river at 42°55'06.0"N 142°53'49.7"E

While traveling by bicycle from Kosaka Town toward Nigori-go Onsen, I saw a bear at this location. I was walking while pushing my bicycle when a bear appeared about 30 meters ahead at a curve in the road. The bear crossed the road (from left to right) and moved into the vegetation on the far side. The bear glanced toward me for a moment but ignored me. I stood and waited there for a few minutes, and afterwards I safely passed the spot where the bear had crossed. Observations: When riding a bicycle or motorcycle in this area, be especially careful where there are bushes, bamboo grass (sasa), or other vegetation along both sides of the road where bears can hide. Reduce your speed to avoid sudden encounters. Cyclists may also want to attach a bear bell for bicycles or ring a bell. Note: The photos were taken from Google Maps Street View. The bear appeared at the location shown in the photos. About 70 meters before where I encountered the bear, there were about 10 monkeys.
