After descending from Mount Mashu, I saw large leaves moving in the trees about 100 meters before the junction with Mount Nishibetsu. I stopped to observe and made noise. Later, I saw the bear run down into the forest below.

The picture is part of the video I recorded less than five minutes away from the sighting. A medium size (young adult) bear was coming down the hill to the left, about 200 meters up ahead from where I was. It got startled by my presence and ran up the hill. It was on the first part of the nakasendo trail where you enter the woods right after you cross the Yo river (heading to Nojiri from Nagiso) .

While riding the Mitake Mountain ropeway, I spotted a moving cub. When I reported it to the ropeway staff, they said cubs have been seen there frequently lately. They explained it was a young bear that had just become independent from its mother.

About 15 minutes after beginning the descent from Kasatori Hut toward the water source, we encountered what appeared to be a cub. The bear does not appear in the photograph. It was in the area beyond the photo where the sasa (bamboo grass) grows tall. We were walking in a group of four and ringing a bear bell; the bear noticed us first and ran off to the south.
