Lake Shikotsu saw a brown bear on May 9, 2026 in Suimeigyo, Chitose, when police reported a single animal around 7:35 in the morning and another sighting was also reported around 7:40 nearby along Prefectural Route 16. Another brown bear had already been confirmed in Suimeikyo on April 1, 2026, so this stretch near the lake has been in the news again and again.
