Lake Suwa’s latest hard edge came on May 4, 2026, when a single black bear about 1.1 meters long was captured after appearing at a residence with a vegetable stand in Hoshifuru sato, Hara Village, and similar sightings were also reported that same morning in Nakashinden and Shinmida in Hara. Another bear was also found near the Suwa Minami interchange area in Fujimi on May 3, showing that the pressure is still pushing into the settled side of the basin.
The busiest ground has been around Hara, with repeated reports near restaurants, garages, and homes, while Shiojiri has also stayed active with recent sightings in Seba and Kaminishijo. Activity peaks in November with 32 incidents and stays heavy in December with 16, then remains present into April with 5; across this area, there have been 177 black bear sightings overall.
