Shinoridate has been seeing brown bear activity right in the school zone again: on March 3, 2026, a parent and cub were reported on the grounds of Zenkamezawa Junior High School and reportedly crossed directly in front of the student entrance. That same school had earlier bear appearances on February 10 and February 9, 2026, and similar tracks were also found at Senkamezawa Junior High School and at business sites in Hakodate on February 5, 2026.

Most of the pressure is around Hakodate, especially near junior high schools, residential edges, and the Suzurankamachi and Suzuranoka cho area, with the strongest burst in February 2026 at 12 incidents and another rise in November 2025 at 8. The year before that stayed busy as well, with October 2025 at 22, September 2025 at 23, and August 2025 at 18, and Shinoridate has recorded 255 brown bear sightings overall.
