He fought back with his hands and used a leg sweep similar to an o-soto-gari to topple the bear, after which the bear fled into the mountain.

Around 05:00 on November 9, 2025, a man in his 50s preparing ingredients behind a ramen shop in Kawamorita, Sannohe Town, was attacked by a single bear about 1 meter long; he sustained scratches to his face and a wound between his eyebrows and was taken to a hospital in Hachinohe. His life is not in danger, and the bear fled from behind the shop toward the mountains.
