A single Asiatic black bear (approx. 1.5 m long) was sighted near Kuwano 5-chome, Kōriyama City, Fukushima Prefecture. The bear moved from a residential area to Ōshima Nature Fureai Plaza and the Ouse Riverbank; the city and police set box traps, used fireworks to drive it away, and considered emergency shooting while warning residents and asking nearby elementary and junior high schools to refrain from sending students or to close temporarily. No human injuries have been reported.

While walking, a driver in an oncoming vehicle told me “there’s a bear.” When I looked, I saw one bear (about 1.5 m in body length) about 5 m away. It had climbed over the wall on the east side of Shimazu Shokai Co., Ltd. and was running south along the road on the west side of Oshima Central Park.

On the night of April 6, 2026, a single bear about 1.5 m long was sighted near Oshima Shizen Fureai Hiroba in Tomita, Kōriyama. The animal stayed in riverside thickets along the Ouse River; the city, police and hunting association used drones, fireworks, water cannon and box traps to try to drive and capture it but failed. The bear moved north on April 8 and sheltered in vegetation near the Banetsu Expressway embankment, where the city carried out an emergency shooting and the bear was killed in the afternoon (around 15:40–15:45). No human injuries were reported.
