On May 17 at around 11:55, a man in his 30s of Russian nationality was attacked by an adult Asiatic black bear on Mt. Minokido (Sannokido) in Okutama-machi, Tokyo, sustaining serious injuries to his face and arms. He was airlifted by a fire department helicopter to a hospital in Hachioji and is not in life-threatening condition; he was hiking alone without a bear bell and the bear fled immediately after the attack.
