Minamiizu Bear Incident Map

Minamiizu, Shizuoka

Just after sunset, still dim but safe to see without a light. While looking at shrimp burrows and passing in front of the illegal-fishing monitoring building, I muttered to myself and saw two bears about 100 m ahead on the sea side, moving into the brush. They were well-fed and so may have looked large; the one that appeared to be the parent looked about 150 cm, and the one behind about 100 cm. A friend in Nishina has seen a similar sow and cub, so they might even be the same animals. This wasn't my first bear sighting — I’ve also hit a bear on the Tohoku Expressway.
