Backcountry camping in Daisetsuzan - food storage tips? - Thread image 1

Planning a 5-day backcountry trip in Daisetsuzan this August. I've camped in grizzly country in British Columbia so I have experience, but Japan seems different.

  • Are there bear boxes or food storage infrastructure at campsites?
  • Do Japanese backcountry campers hang food? Use canisters?
  • Hakuun shelter was closed for bears in 2025. Current status?
  • Any Hokkaido brown bear behaviors that differ from North American grizzlies?

Hokkaido has 12,455 tracked incidents. Daisetsuzan is core habitat. Your BC experience helps since the Ussuri brown bear is the same species as the grizzly, different subspecies. Males range 200-400 kg.

Big difference from BC: bear boxes are NOT standard at Japanese backcountry campsites. Canisters aren't commonly sold here either. Most Japanese campers hang food from hut eaves or trees, but proper bear-hang technique is not widely practiced. Consider hut-to-hut instead of full backcountry camping.

Daisetsuzan specifics:

  • Hakuun had restrictions in 2025 due to mothers with cubs. Check current status at Sounkyo Visitor Center before departing.
  • Brown bears here actively hunt Ezo sika deer. More predatory than black bears.
  • Salmon runs (Aug-Oct) concentrate bears near rivers.
  • Some trail sections near Takanegahara open only for brief windows.

Key precaution: bear spray accessible at all times, not buried in your pack.
