I looked from a second-floor window and saw a bear walking along the bank from downstream toward the iron bridge. When I shouted loudly, it hurriedly went down the embankment toward the river, and its whereabouts after that are unknown. There happened to be an angler under the iron bridge about 100 meters away; the police arrived, issued a warning, and the angler left. It was a large bear for an adult. It was within 10 meters of a house.

The bear’s size was about 1.0–1.2 meters. The bear entered the park-side thicket once, but then returned to the same spot. After that it repeated disappearing into and reappearing from the thicket three times, and finally disappeared into the thicket. At that time, there were only a few cars in the parking lot. Also, traffic between Tersa and Aeon was not heavy. Weather: clear. Temperature: 18°C.

In the early morning of May 19, 2026, a roughly 70-cm bear was sighted in front of Neburi Nagashi-kan in Omachi, Akita City at about 02:30. At 09:50 a similarly sized bear-like animal was seen near a nearby parking lot. Subsequent sightings were reported along the river, at a shrine, and near a supermarket, and authorities say the bear may still be in the area.
