At around 06:30 on May 17, 2026, a 78-year-old man picking wild plants near the left bank of the Teshio River in Tayori-cho, Shibetsu City, encountered one brown bear. When the man backed away and the bear leaned over him, he punched the bear in the nose, after which the bear retreated into the brush; the man was uninjured. Police increased patrols and warned local residents.

On May 13, 2026, just after 19:00, a driver spotted a bear about 1.5 meters long on a road in Fukunaga, Toyotomi Town, and reported it to the police. When officers checked the scene they found bear droppings on the road, and the Teshio police station has stepped up patrols in the area.

The driver and passenger were uninjured, and the bear left the scene after the collision. A passerby driver found the damaged vehicle and called 110 (police).
