Around 20:10 on December 15, one bear was sighted in Daitocho, Tsuruoka City, observed moving from the Daitocho 17 block toward the Central Children's Center. The bear was estimated to be about 80 cm long; its subsequent whereabouts are unknown and the city has urged caution.

On November 5, a bear about 70 cm long was reported occupying a residential property in Chojamachi, Tsuruoka. Authorities responded, captured it with a tranquillizer gun, and subsequently euthanized it; other bear sightings were reported elsewhere in the prefecture that day, prompting warnings.
