At Sebi Onsen in Kitakami, Iwate, a 60-year-old employee went missing on October 16 while cleaning an outdoor bath; bloodstains, animal hair and personal items were found at the scene. On the morning of October 17 a severely injured body was discovered in nearby woodland and an adult bear found at the site was culled by hunters. The incident follows several bear-related human fatalities in the area since summer, heightening local concern and affecting tourism.
