On the morning of April 20, in Nanyo City Ueno, a moving car collided with a bear about 1 meter long; after the collision the bear entered the nearby mountain. Prefectural figures show 68 bear sightings in 2026 as of April 12, and sightings by the end of March had already exceeded three times those in 2025, so the prefecture is urging caution during farming and wild-plant gathering.

In Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture, a municipal employee on bear patrol was seriously injured by a bear that suddenly emerged from brush on the morning of November 1. The city has installed three box traps near the scene but has not captured the animal, which remains at large, and searches and warnings are ongoing. Authorities note the bear may be the same individual that damaged the entrance door of Akayu Elementary School on October 29, prompting continued local alerts.
