The driver said that if it had been dark they might have collided, and prefectural police report there have been three vehicle collisions with bears this year.

At around 14:25 on April 13, 2026, a woman in her 70s sighted a bear about 1 meter long crossing a town road in Nanakura, Gojome Town, Akita Prefecture. The site is a residential area about 250 meters from the Gojome police station; multiple sightings have been reported and the police are using patrol cars to warn residents.
