Around 17:13 on January 13, 2026, a single juvenile bear about 50 cm long was sighted in front of a house in Atsumi, Tsuruoka City, Yamagata Prefecture. The city said another juvenile bear was seen in the Atsumi settlement around 12:35 the same day; the bears' subsequent whereabouts are unknown and the city has urged caution.
