At around 13:50 on May 16 in a woodland area of Shinkai, Asahikawa, a couple finishing foraging for mountain plants saw two bears (a parent and a cub, about 1.5 m and 50 cm long) climbing a tree roughly 3 meters away as they were getting into their car. The couple were unharmed; police who responded found no bears or traces at the scene and remain on alert.
