At about 05:50 on January 9, one bear approximately 1 meter long was sighted in woodland near Kitamura Elementary School in Ishinomaki, observed by a staff member spreading de-icing agent in a parking lot. No damage was reported; the elementary school suspended use of its schoolyard for the day and the nearby nursery is keeping children from outdoor play.
