Mount Aonegamine saw its most striking recent report on April 5, 2026 at Yoshino, where a jet black black bear over 1 meter in body length came down from the slope onto the forest road, ran across it, and disappeared back down the slope. That kind of close road crossing is exactly why hikers have been seeing this area as active.
The activity is strongest around Yoshino and Oyodo, with other reports also coming from Tenkawa Dorogawa, Gojo Nishiyoshinocho Karato, Shimoichi Achiga, Higashiyoshino Ogawa, and Kurotaki Nagase. Sightings peaked in December 2025 with 19 reports, stayed high in November 2025 with 13, and then continued through January 2026 with 6 and March 2026 with 2; this area has recorded 66 black bear sightings overall.
