Bears are a dealbreaker for my partner. Where can we hike with zero risk?
My partner absolutely refuses to hike anywhere with bears. Not low risk. Zero bears.
I've heard Kyushu and Shikoku might be options. But I want to confirm before planning a hiking trip.
- Which prefectures have genuinely zero bear population?
- Good hiking in those areas?
- Is Shikoku truly bear-free?
- Any other surprisingly bear-free spots?

九州は熊いません。
2000年代に絶滅したと言われ、祖母山系、傾山あたりには、昔の「熊に注意」の看板が残ってますが、いないようです。本州で何度か見かけましたが、九州の山では気配ありません。いい所沢山ありますよ。
九州は熊はいませんが四国には極少匹ですが熊はいます。
観光目的なら山がない比較的に大きな都市で有れば熊はいませんが、本州は千葉県を除き山が有る所にはツキノワグマがいます。
千葉県のハイキングコースならいっぱい有りますよ
千葉県は小さな山ですが鋸山や鹿野山・富山・鵜原理想郷・養老渓谷 等色々有ります。
鎖やロープを使うハードな登山が好きなら伊予ヶ岳がオススメ
観光なら小学校の廃校を利用した施設 保田小学校やマザー牧場等調べると色々有ります。
廃業を何とか立て直し頑張ってるレトロな銚子電鉄を乗り降りするのもオススメ 時期により電車内を飾ってたり面白い事やってます 貧乏鉄道会社なのでぬれ煎餅買ってあげて下さい 笑
Kumamap has zero incidents across all 7 Kyushu prefectures: Fukuoka, Saga, Nagasaki, Kumamoto, Oita, Miyazaki, Kagoshima. Bears went extinct there. Last confirmed sighting was 1987.
Kyushu hiking with zero bear risk:
- Mount Aso (Kumamoto): active volcano, stunning caldera
- Kirishima range (Miyazaki/Kagoshima): volcanic, hot springs
- Yakushima: UNESCO ancient cedar forests
Okinawa: no bears have ever lived there.
Shikoku: NOT completely bear-free. About 20 black bears survive in remote areas of Tokushima (26 incidents) and Kochi (9 incidents). They're critically endangered with 60% extinction probability by 2040. Ehime and Kagawa are effectively zero risk though.
Other near-zero options:
- Ibaraki (5 incidents): Mount Tsukuba has cable car access, good family trails
- Any island without mainland forest connection (Sado, Awaji) is bear-free
Kyushu has world-class hiking with zero bear risk. Aso, Kirishima, and Yakushima alone could fill a week.
