Shortly after midnight on November 6, 2025, a large truck struck a roughly 1-meter-long bear near the exit of the Shimo-Yasaka Tunnel on the Sanriku Coastal Road in Noda Village, Iwate. The struck bear died, while two cubs believed to be its offspring remained at the scene; parts of the Sanriku Coastal Road remain closed. The village is consulting with the hunters' association on how to respond.
