Around 06:00 on May 21, 2026, one bear was sighted moving toward the Shinano River Sports Park area while traveling on the main prefectural road Ojiya–Tokamachi–Tsunan in the Sugata No.1 area of Tokamachi. The city warned residents to avoid forests and thickets and urged measures such as carrying bells or bear spray.

A single adult bear was sighted near Yoshida Junior High School on Prefectural Route Tokamachi–Kawanishi. On-site inspection found no footprints or signs of movement.

One bear was sighted near Tsumaari Bridge (Tsurikkko Plaza). Body length about 1 m. It moved into the woods on the west side. Another sighting was reported at the same location around 16:30 on the same day.

Encountered one bear in Senju Tunnel (body length 1–1.2 m, weight 70–80 kg). After receiving a report, the city and the hunters’ association found tracks believed to belong to two bears (a parent and a cub). The bears are thought to have moved toward the forest area of the Hoshi to Mori Art Museum.
