July 31, in Kawamae-cho, Iwaki City, a prefectural employee driving along a prefectural road observed an animal crossing the road that was thought to be a bear and reported it to the city; video footage was provided. The city identified it as a moon bear (Asiatic black bear) on August 1, marking the first confirmed sighting of a moon bear in Iwaki City.
