On March 27 in Inawashiro Town, Fukushima Prefecture, separate bear sightings were reported. At about 10:45 a.m., a single bear about 1.0 m long was seen in a rice field in Yamagata; at about 6:00 p.m., two bears about 60 cm long were seen on and at the base of a chestnut tree in a residential property in Mitsuwa. Around 9:05 PM on October 22, on the JR Ban'etsu West Line track area in Mitsuwa, Inawashiro Town, a train driver observed a bear about 1 m entering the track from the right side and colliding with the train. The bear was struck by the train. There were no injuries and the train service was not disrupted, but delays of up to 37 minutes occurred.
