On the morning of May 8, 2026, a newspaper delivery woman found bear droppings along a street in Nakayubetsu Higashicho, Yubetsu. Around midnight a single bear about 1.5 m long was sighted, footprints were found nearby, police are on alert, and Yubetsu High School canceled club activities and sent students home.
