Around 22:50 on January 1, 2026, a single bear about 1 meter long was sighted on the grounds of a private residence in Utatsu Nakano, Minamisanriku, Miyagi Prefecture, and a resident called emergency services. The bear left the scene, no one was injured, and police patrolled the area but did not locate the animal.
