In Funasaku district, Fukaura Town, Aomori Prefecture, about 3 hectares of the roughly 20 hectares planted with the branded carrot "Fukaura Yuki Ninjin" were damaged by bears, with losses estimated at over 5 million yen. Bears began eating soybeans in early October and then repeatedly targeted the carrots; initially parent-and-child bears were seen but recently lone cubs have been more common, sometimes showing threatening behavior and not fleeing when people approach.
