Teine yama has just seen a troubling incident on April 24, 2026, on the Mt. Sankakuyama trail in Sapporo’s Nishi Ward, where three teenagers were hurt after bear deterrent spray was accidentally discharged into their eyes during a hike. Earlier in April, a brown bear was also reported in the Miyanomori area, showing that this hillside country is still active and close to where people live and walk.

The busiest stretches have been around Miyanomori, Sapporo Yamanote, and Teine-Tomioka, with reports clustering near forest edges, trailheads, and the residential side of the slope. Activity peaked in October 2025 with 115 incidents and stayed very high in November 2025 with 63, before easing through winter and rising again in March 2026 with 14. Across this area, there have been 608 brown bear sightings in total.
