Joetsu’s most recent alarm came on April 23, 2026, when one black bear was seen on Prefectural Road Kamiozawa Wakinodasen and was moving toward the river. The day before, a bear about 1 meter long was spotted near a bus stop in Nishikamoda, Nadachi Ward, very close to houses, and another report from the same area said the animal moved southeast along the prefectural road after garbage was taken out.
The busiest ground keeps clustering around Nadachi Ward, Ōnuki, Yoshikawa Ward, and Shimobaba, where bears have been showing up beside roads, houses, farms, and even the expressway corridor. Activity was heaviest in October 2025 with 42 incidents and November 2025 with 31, and even into January 2026 there were 10 reports, while Joetsu has recorded 810 black bear sightings overall.
