It turns out he's protecting the ruins of Takayama Castle. I really want to go there, but after these messages, I'm not sure I should go alone.
I saw this yesterday running uphill whilst on the castle ruin hike. Halfway across the road at the bottom of the hike. Large black bear running uphill towards the road
