Where can I buy bear spray in Japan?

Flying into Narita next month for a 10-day trip. Northern Alps first, then Hokkaido. Bear spray can't go on planes so I need to buy it in Japan.
Specific questions:
- Is it legal to carry on trails?
- Where can I buy it? Shop names would help.
- Brand recommendations? I use Counter Assault back home.
- Price range?
2025 had 13 deaths and 217+ injuries from bears. Not messing around with this.

Nagano has 3,395 tracked incidents and Hokkaido has 12,455, so yeah, good call on getting spray.
Legal for wilderness use. Carrying it visibly in cities can violate the Minor Offenses Act, so keep it in your pack until you hit the trailhead.
Where to buy:
- Montbell stores (60+ locations). Shinjuku, Shibuya, Sapporo all have flagships. They stock Counter Assault.
- Amazon.co.jp: search for bear spray. 1-2 day delivery with Prime.
- L-Breath, Wild-1 carry them seasonally.
Brands available in Japan:
- Counter Assault: most common, 7,000-9,000 yen
- TW1000: European, around 5,000-6,000 yen
- Frontiersman: on Amazon.co.jp
Effective range is 5-9 meters. Practice removing the safety clip before you need it.
One thing since you're doing both areas: the Northern Alps has black bears (40-120kg). Hokkaido has brown bears (200-400kg). Different species, different response if attacked. Check our guide: kumamap.com/en/blog/bears-in-japan-guide
