On a forest road in Okutama-machi Sakae, a man in his 30s from Russia who was hiking alone on Mt. Mutsuoishi was attacked by a bear and suffered serious bleeding injuries to his face and arms. He was airlifted by doctor helicopter by emergency crews and is not believed to be in life-threatening condition; the bear is thought to be an adult and has not yet been found.

Around noon on the 17th, a Russian man in his 30s was attacked by a bear near the end of the Konakazawa forest road in Okutama (border area) and sustained injuries to his arm and face; he was airlifted by Tokyo Fire Department helicopter to a hospital. He was conscious and is believed to have serious injuries; he was not carrying bear-deterrent devices such as a bell, and the town has set capture cages and urged people to avoid nearby trails.

Near the end of the descent on the Kamosawa route, about 10 minutes before the trail reaches the point where the road on the left becomes visible, a bear was found on the left side of the trail. Its body length was about 1.5 m. It appeared to be eating something from the ground; it made eye contact but was undisturbed and continued eating, and did not approach us.
