Around 21:30 on January 19, in a residential area of Takuyu Nishi-machi 3-chome, Tomakomai, a woman in her 50s who was clearing snow reported seeing a bear-like animal about 1 meter long walking on all fours eastward about 30 meters away and called emergency services. Police patrolled the area but did not find the animal; they have stepped up vigilance around an elementary school located about 50 meters from the sighting.
