On the morning of December 11, 2025, a male bear about 1.5 meters long was spotted in a residential area of Tomoecho, Tsuruoka City; after securing the area authorities carried out an emergency shooting around 08:35 and killed the bear. The same individual was believed to have been sighted in the area in the days prior, and on December 9 a free-roaming dog was found dead after being bitten by a bear.
