Around 18:40 on May 21, a woman in her 60s at home spotted a bear about 1 meter long in a field in Takasaki, Gojome-machi, Akita Prefecture (Takasaki aza Suzumedate Shimokawara). According to the Gojome police, the bear was about 10 meters from a nearby house, and the police have warned residents to be cautious.

On 2026-05-19 a bear was sighted on the Akita Expressway near Gojome Town; when a driver slowed down the bear, startled, ran alongside the car. The driver said that if it had been dark they might have collided, and prefectural police report there have been three vehicle collisions with bears this year.

Came out in front of a car, went through the irrigation channel behind Maruhan Sotoasahikawa, crossed from Akigin Sotoasahikawa branch toward the dentist opposite, entered the grounds of the house behind the dentist, and is believed to still be on that property. Appears to have an injured right front leg and was limping while running. Body length about 1.2 m.
