In the early morning of May 19, 2026, a roughly 70-cm bear was sighted in front of Neburi Nagashi-kan in Omachi, Akita City at about 02:30. At 09:50 a similarly sized bear-like animal was seen near a nearby parking lot. Subsequent sightings were reported along the river, at a shrine, and near a supermarket, and authorities say the bear may still be in the area.

Around 04:20 on May 18, a black bear about 1.2 meters long was sighted near JR Izumigaoka-Akihikawa Station in Sotoasahikawa, Akita City; it appeared to have an injured front paw. On May 17 in the same area, a bear believed to have an injured front paw entered a private property, and police responded by setting off firecrackers.

At around 17:45 on May 17, one bear was sighted on the grounds of a private home in Gaikasugawa, Sango-dena, Akita City. The Akita Rinko Police Station has not confirmed whether the bear left and is continuing to monitor the area, saying the bear may still be on the property.

Came out in front of a car, went through the irrigation channel behind Maruhan Sotoasahikawa, crossed from Akigin Sotoasahikawa branch toward the dentist opposite, entered the grounds of the house behind the dentist, and is believed to still be on that property. Appears to have an injured right front leg and was limping while running. Body length about 1.2 m.
