Yamamoto Town in Miyagi Prefecture prepared 777 bear-deterrent bells at a cost of about ¥600,000 and held a presentation ceremony at Yamashita Elementary School on February 26 to give them to all elementary and junior high students. The town decided to distribute the bells after a roughly 1-meter bear was captured in December in a forested area of the Ohira district using a box trap; this is believed to be the town's first captured bear.

At around 06:50 on December 16, 2025, a 73-year-old man found a female bear (about 1 meter long) caught in a box trap for wild boar in a forested area of Ohiradate-no-uchi, Yamamoto Town. The town's wildlife damage control team responded and euthanized the bear after it began to struggle and damage the trap, creating a danger to personnel.
