Walking up to the Aketaki trail in the coniferous part of the forest, i heard the rustling noises of something moving away from me but saw nothing. This was about 3pm. On the way down in the same location I heard the same noises. I looked up and saw 2 dark outlines of animals, both sat on their hind legs looking at me, about 50m higher up. I backed away and continued walking and they didn't follow. I'm 90% sure it was 2 bears, a mother and a cub, but I didn't wait around to take photos!

Around 06:30 on December 4, 2025, a 78-year-old self-employed man was attacked by a single bear while shoveling snow in front of his home near the hot spring area of Toyosato, Nozawa Onsen Village, sustaining injuries to his face and legs and was taken to hospital. Bloodstains were found in the snow at the scene, and about 15 minutes after the attack a bear was photographed in a parking lot roughly 250–300 meters away, but it was not subsequently captured.
