On Friday, May 15 at around 5:30 p.m., in Shibahara, Mafune, Saigo Village, on National Route 289, a woman traveling by car witnessed a bear (approximately 1.5 m in body length) cross the road and enter the forested area to the north.

On April 22 just after 4 p.m., at the Japan Ground Self-Defense Force’s Shirakawa Nunobikiyama training area straddling Ten'ei Village and Nishigo Village, a Self-Defense Forces man in his 30s was attacked by a bear and received five stitches to his right arm and left wrist. He was discharged from hospital the same day.

He was bitten on his right arm and left wrist, required five stitches, and sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
