Calm Wanderer

We were walking along the lakeshore from the Tatsuko statue toward the shrine — about five kilometers. Then, around the three-kilometer mark, a cub came down from the mountain onto the road. We were ringing a bear bell, but it didn’t run away, and thinking the mother might be nearby, we turned back toward the Tatsuko statue. It was nerve-wracking — it’s startling when one suddenly appears.
