Mombetsu saw a striking encounter on April 23, 2026, when 3 brown bears, an adult with 2 cubs, were spotted near National Route 273 in Kaminushibetsu, Monbetsu City. A driver’s horn sent them away, and no one was hurt and no damage was reported.

The most active spots have been around Shokotsu, Nagashibetsu-cho, and Kamishokotsu-cho, with other reports also coming from Oyamacho, Numanoue, and Kodo.
