Masuda's most recent black bear report came on April 28, 2026, when one bear was seen fishing at the river in Masuda Shiraiwacho, then ran down toward the rockfall prevention fence, hit it, and climbed back up the mountain. Earlier in April, another bear was found near Tōda IC in Todacho on April 26, and two more sightings were logged in Somebacho on April 25 and in Mukaiyokotacho on April 2 near Kosumi Shrine.

The heaviest activity has been around the road and river edge in Masuda Shiraiwacho, Somebacho, Kawanoboricho, Todacho, and Mukaiyokotacho, with recent reports also reaching the Mito Town side near National Route 191. Sightings have been strongest in July and May with 10 incidents each, and the area has recorded 80 black bear sightings overall, so these reports are not isolated.
