Lake Towada saw a black bear cub near the Onabuyama observation deck in Okuze, Towada City at about 08:20 on May 8, 2026, the latest in a run of sightings around the Oirase area. Earlier in May, bears were also reported near Shimeikei on the Oirase stream and in the Oirase Gorge in Towada City, with no injuries or captures reported.

The most active ground has been around Towada City and the Oirase corridor, with additional reports along routes and river edges in Kosaka, Kazuno, and Hirakawa. Activity was busiest in July 2025 with 54 incidents, and it stayed high through September 2025 and October 2025, when there were 48 and 47 incidents, before easing in winter. Across Lake Towada, the area has recorded 530 black bear sightings overall.
