[Report] While driving on National Route 101 from the Akita City direction toward Oga, a bear slowly crossed the road (National Route 101) from the right side of travel (northeast) to the left side (southwest). After it finished crossing the road, it was seen entering the brush of the woods on the left side of the road. Both I and the passenger in the front seat witnessed it. The distance to the bear was about 20 meters, and since it was not yet dark, its appearance was clearly visible. A car that had been traveling alongside in the right lane was a bit ahead and saw the bear, then braked hard. There was no collision with any vehicle, and it appeared there were no people nearby. The bear was an adult about 150 cm in body length, with good fur and a solid build. No other bears were observed nearby. This sighting has been reported to the police.

I was watching the meteor shower when I heard a rustling from the drainage ditch. A large black bear ran by, and what looked like a cub followed. I was startled and called out, and the bear turned and looked back at us. Then it ran off to the south. It appeared to have crossed the road, and it’s possible it’s hiding on someone’s property. Be cautious of your surroundings when going toward the rice fields.
