At around 08:00 on April 20, 2026, an ordinary passenger car traveling on a municipal road in Ueno, Nanyo City, Yamagata Prefecture collided with a bear about 1 meter long. After the collision the bear fled into the nearby mountains.

In Yamagata City, a 60-year-old woman taking part in bear extermination operations slipped and fell several dozen meters, suffering serious injuries including broken ribs. Because of sunset she could not descend and waited overnight; she was rescued the next morning by a fire department disaster-prevention helicopter.
