On Tuesday, May 12 at approximately 6:24 p.m., near the 109.2 kilometer post on the outbound (upbound) lane of the Ban'etsu Expressway, Hatta Aza Kayama 1, Kawahigashi-machi, Aizuwakamatsu City, a passenger car driven by a man in his 30s, while traveling in the first lane of the outbound carriageway, collided with a bear (about 80 cm in body length) that crossed from the right to the left of the direction of travel. The driver of the colliding vehicle was uninjured. There were no passengers. After striking the vehicle, the bear departed the scene in an unknown direction.
