On May 17, 2026 at around 14:00, a member of a hunting association entering the forest in Hirame district, Isozaki-cho, Kumano City, Mie Prefecture to check traps sighted a single bear-like animal about 1 meter long, which disappeared deeper into the mountains. The site was about 50 meters south of a settlement, and the city issued a warning via its disaster administrative wireless on the morning of the 18th.
