While driving from Kyōwa toward Akita Airport, a bear crossed in front of our car and then entered the woods. A vehicle of people gathering wild plants was parked nearby.

There were three bears — a mother and two cubs — attempting to cross the road toward the airport. Startled by a car, the cubs couldn’t cross and split to either side of the road. I was surprised to see a mother with cubs at this time of year.

While driving from the Yuwa area, I spotted a bear about 1.2 m long that had come onto the road and was climbing the embankment beside the road. When I stopped the car, it looked toward us briefly, then, appearing wary, ran away.
